Recovering from the Hurricane — A Week and a Nor’Easter Later

Posted in Life happens at 11:09 pm by otherdeb

NOTE:  This blog entry is being typed in MS Word 2010, and will be posted to the blog once power returns.  We lost power at just before 4 pm.

===================================

Well, things are back, more or less, to normal – financially speaking, that is.  The roomie made up for last month’s shortfall, and – thanks to Hurricane Sandy – our various creditors are being more than reasonable about giving me a few extra days to get caught up.  Well, most of them are.  I got a bill from National Grid today that does not reflect the payment that was made to them that cleared the day before the bill was issued.  Not a big deal – just need to remember that I only need to pay half the amount on the bill when I pay them next time.

During and after the storm, I did a lot of bulk cooking.  Soups and stews, and such – things we could easily heat on top of the stove if power was down – largely because during the storm the tree in front of our house got uprooted and took down several power lines. That’s why I have no power at the moment – a team of electrical workers from Pensacola, FL is outside the house working on restoring the lines, so they had to turn off the power.  The gentleman leading the team assures me that they were told they had to finish this project tonight, so that we will have power soon, but he is not sure how long it will take.  The four power line poles that snapped when the tree went down were from the 1930s, so it’s well beyond time that they were replaced, but infrastructure work is so far behind up here that it takes something like this to get the work done. The roomie and I offered to make the men tea or coffee (which we can do on the stove (gas-powered), and the use of a real bathroom instead of the bucket on the truck they were using), and were thanked heartily by the crew.  We told them it was only right to offer, and thanked them for coming out all the way from Florida to help us out.  Honestly, the expenditure would not have been much.  In fact, if I had gotten up and moving earlier, I would have had some nice, hot, crusty bread to offer them, but the dough was still rising when the power went down.  It’s now in the fridge, per the recipe instructions.  When the lights come back on, we will make dinner, although it will probably be fairly late for dinner, since neither the roomie nor I fancies trying to cook by candlelight.

That’s about it for now, since I want to save my computer battery.

Edited to add:  We just got our power back at 9:23 pm, for the night.  They still have to replace one of the light & power poles, which will hopefully be done tomorrow, while I am away.

      Thanks, Joanne. Unfortunately, the power outage occurred while someone was trying to get me re logistics for tomorrow, so things are a bit screwy, but I’m sure it will get worked out somehow.
